Wear Sunscreen…

‘Wear Sunscreen – If I could offer you only one tip for the future, Sunscreen would be it,’ When Baz Luhrmann told us this 20 years ago  I never realised that would be the same piece of advice I give when asked what is the singularly most important product to use daily on skin. And now we know about the benefits of a physical sunscreen over chemical ones, we should all be able to age more gracefully than the increasingly popular app, FaceAge currently predicts! Worryingly, a recent survey by the British Association of Dermatologists found that 80 per cent of individuals are failing to adequately apply sunscreen before going out in the sun. My mission is to make sure you are not one of those! Don’t get me wrong, I believe sun is good for you! We all love the feeling of sunshine on our skin, and our skin needs that vitamin D; studies consistently show that a vitamin D boost has benefits for the immune system, mood, energy and strong bones – and in the UK we need to soak it up when we can. But before you go out and bask in those rays, there are a few things you should know! Sun damage is always happening, UVA rays are the same all year round and they penetrate everything, yes even glass, including your car and house windows! UVA damages the pigmentation in your skin, leaving an uneven skin tone, which is far more aging than wrinkles. When CGI is used to age actors in movies, it’s an uneven skin tone which is added for the greatest aging effect. What is worse is that the damage to the pigmentation in your skin starts in childhood, so sun protection really is crucial for all your family, whatever their age. So, to remain youthful, keep those rays off your face and always protect your skin with a high quality physical sunscreen.  Wear Sunscreen!

A physical sunscreen offers a protective barrier ageing the suns rays, reflecting away from the skin whereas chemical sunscreens absorb and disperse UV rays, and get broken down in the process. These breakdown chemicals get absorbed in the skin, with increasing evidence that they can harm us. Many countries have now banned certain types of chemicals in sunscreen, because of the damage they do to the environment – including destroying coral reefs – so imagine what they must be doing to our bodies!
